1. Narrated to Saeed bin Jubair:
from Ibn ‘Abbas, regarding the saying of Allah, Most High: Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated. In the nearest land (30:1-3),” he said: defeated and then victorious.” He said: “The idolaters wanted the Persians to be victorious over the Romans because they too were people who worshipped idols, while the Muslims wanted the Romans to be victorious over the Persians because they were people of the Book. This was mentioned to Abu Bakr, so Abu Bakr mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH), and he said: They will certainly prevail.’ Abu Bakr mentioned that to them, and they said: ‘Make a wager between you and us; if we win, we shall get this and that, and if you win, you shall get this or that.’ He made the term five years, but they (the Romans) were not victorious. They mentioned that to the Prophet (PBUH), and he said: Why did you not make it less (than)” – He (one of the narrators said): I think he said: “ten?” Sa’eed said: “Al-Bid’ is what is less than then” – he said: “Afterwards, the Romans have been victorious.” He said: “That is what Allah Most High said: ‘Alif Lam Mim. The Romans have been defeated’ up to His saying: ‘And on the day, the believers will rejoice – with the help of Allah. He helps whom He wills (30:1-5).’ Sufyan said: “I heard that they were victorious over them on the Day of Badr.
(Jamia Tarimzi: 3193)
2. Hazrat Abu Huraira reported Allah’s Apostle (PBUH) as saying that:
Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, said: I have prepared for My pious servants which no eye has ever seen, and no ear has ever heard, and no human heart has ever perceived, but the Book of Allah testifies it. He then recited:” No soul knows what comfort has been concealed from them, as a reward for what they did.
(Sahih Muslim: 2824)
3. Narrated to Hazrat Alqama that:
Abdullah cursed those women who practiced tattooing, those who removed hair from their faces, and those who artificially created spaces between their teeth to look beautiful, such as who changed what Allah has created. Um e Yaqub said, “What is that?” `Abdullah said, “Why should I not curse those who were cursed by Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) and are referred to in Allah’s Book?” She said to him, “By Allah, I have read the whole Qur’an, but I have not found such a thing. `Abdullah said, “By Allah, you would have found it if you had read it (carefully). (Allah says:) ‘And what the Apostle gives you take it and what he forbids you to abstain (from it).
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 5939)
4. Narrated to Hazrat Amar bin Al-Harith that:
Zainab, the wife of Abdullah, said, “I was in the Mosque and saw the Prophet (PBUH) saying, O women! Give alms even from your ornaments.’ ” Zainab used to provide for `Abdullah and those orphans under her protection. So she said to `Abdullah, “Will you ask Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) whether it will be sufficient for me to spend part of the Zakat on you and the orphans under my protection?” He replied, “Will you ask Allah’s Messenger (PBUH)? (Zainab added): So I went to the Prophet, and I saw an Ansari woman standing at the door (of the Prophet (PBUH) ) with a similar problem as mine. Bilal passed by us, and we asked him, ‘Ask the Prophet (PBUH) whether it is permissible for me to spend (the Zakat) on my husband and the orphans under my protection.’ And we requested Bilal not to inform the Prophet (PBUH) about us. So Bilal went inside and asked the Prophet (PBUH) regarding our problem. The Prophet (PBUH) asked, “Who are those two?” Bilal replied that she was Zainab. The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Which Zainab?” Bilal said, “The wife of Abdullah (bin Masud).” The Prophet said, “Yes, (it is sufficient for her) and she will receive double rewards (for that): One for helping relatives, and the other for giving Zakat.
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 1466)
Conclusion
In this Surah, Allah explained that Nuh, Ibrahim, Lut, Shuaib, Hud, Saleh, Musa, and Muhammad all were prophets of God. All of them endured hardships. Hardships prove religious faith. Evil deeds will surely be punished. The righteous shall be rewarded for their good deeds—parents not to be obeyed when they oppose Allah’s law. Hypocrites exposed and rebuked. Unbelievers shall be punished for deceiving others by false promises.
