We mention some famous incidents related to Surah Al-Munafiqun
1. Narrated to Hazrat Zaid bin Arqam:
While I was taking part in a Ghazwa, I heard Abdullah bin Ubai (bin Abi Salul) saying. Don’t spend on those who are with Allah’s Messenger (PBUH), that they may disperse and go away from him. If we return (to Madina), surely, the more honorable will expel the meaner amongst them.” I reported that (saying) to my uncle or to `Umar who, in his turn, informed the Prophet (PBUH) of it. The Prophet (PBUH) called me, and I narrated to him the whole story. Then Allah’s Messenger(PBUH) sent for Hazrat Abdullah bin Ubai and his companions, and they took an oath that they did not say that. So Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) disbelieved my saying and believed his. I was distressed as I had never been before. I stayed at home, and my uncle said to me. “You just wanted Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) to disbelieve your statement and hate you.” So Allah revealed (the Sura beginning with) ‘When the hypocrites come to you. The Prophet (PBUH) then sent for me and recited it and said, “O Zaid! Allah confirmed your statement.
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 4900)
2. Narrated to Hazrat Usama bin Zaid:
The Holy Prophet (PBUH) rode a donkey having a saddle with a Fadakiyya velvet covering. He mounted me behind him and visited Sad bin Ubada, and that had been before the battle of Badar. The Prophet (PBUH) proceeded until he passed by a gathering where Abdullah bin Ubai bin Salul was present, and that had been before Abdullah embraced Islam. The community was comprised of Muslims, polytheists, isolators, and Jews. `Abdullah bin Rawaha was also present in that gathering. When dust raised by the donkey covered the gathering, Abdullah bin Ubai covered his nose with his upper garment and said, “Do not trouble us with dust.” The Prophet (PBUH) greeted them, stopped, and dismounted. Then he invited them to Allah (to embrace Islam) and recited to them some verses of the Holy Qur’an. On that, `Abdullah bin Ubai said, “O man! There is nothing better than what you say if it is true. Do not trouble us with it in our gathering, but return to your house, and if somebody comes to you, teach him there.” On that Abdullah bin Rawaha said, Yes, O Allah’s Messenger (PBUH)! Bring your teachings to our gathering, for we love that.” So the Muslims, the pagans, and the Jews started abusing each other till they were about to fight. The Prophet (PBUH) kept on quietening them till they became calm. The Prophet mounted his animal there and proceeded till he entered upon Sa’d bin Ubada. He said to him “O Sa’d! Have you not heard what Abu Hubab (Abdullah bin Ubai) said?” Sa’d said, O Allah’s Apostle! Excuse and forgive him, for Allah has given you what He has given you. The people of this town (Medina decided unanimously to crown him and make him their chief by placing a turban on his head, but when that was prevented by the Truth which Allah had given you, he (Abdullah bin Ubai) was grieved out of jealously, and that was the reason which caused him to behave in the way you have seen.
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 5663)
3. Narrated to Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah:
We were in a Ghazwa (Sufyan once said, in an army), and a man from the emigrants kicked an Ansari man (on the buttocks with his foot). The Ansari man said, “O the Ansar! (Help!)” and the emigrant said. “O the emigrants! (Help!) Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) heard that and said, “What is this call for, characteristic of the period of ignorance?” They said, “O Allah’s Messenger (PBUH)! A man from the emigrants kicked one of the Ansar (on the buttocks with his foot).” Allah’s Messenger (PBUH) said, “Leave it (that call) as is a detestable thing. Abdullah bin Ubai heard that and said, ‘Have the (the emigrants) done so? By Allah, if we return Madina, surely, the more honorable will expel from that place the meaner.” When this statement reached the Prophet. `Umar got up an said, O Allah’s Messenger (PBUH)! Let me chop off the head of this hypocrite (`Abdullah bin Ubai)!” The Prophet (PBUH) said, “Leave him, lest the people say that Muhammad kills his companions.” The Ansar were then more in number than the emigrants when the latter came to Medina, but later on, the emigrant increased.
